So, I am guessing that road kind of winds and turns all the way through the mountain area? How far into the mtns and mileage back to the nearest town? Are we talking hundreds of miles as I'd guess or much less?

I bet you were driving again too, while snapping off the photos! ;-)

The Virginia Canyon Road runs between Idaho Springs and Central City. It is only about 11 miles. The road does wind and twist around and it does climb steeply out of Idaho Springs. The road is not paved for most of the way, but 4wd is not needed. It is just more entertaining and scenic than taking I70 to the Central City Parkway. I had been on the road years ago and decided to take it north to Central City on my way up to Estes Park. The whole route is just a fantastic drive. Maybe one day I can do it on a motorcycle, but not until I can escape the Rust Belt and head west. It can't happen too soon.

Oh and yes I was snapping photos as I was cruising along. Traffic definitely was not an issue.
